As the 2024 University & School year draws to a close, there is no better time than now for new graduates to sharpen up on your CV writing skills and maximise employment prospects.
Check out our CV writing tips carefully crafted by our team of recruiters to ensure you give yourself the best possible start when searching for your dream job.
Presentation
Getting your CV noticed begins with a neat and concise presentation.
Documents which lack in structure or regular paragraph breaks will place you at a disadvantage from the beginning. In general, if your CV appears to be tidy and well organised, it gives the recruiter the impression that you are the same.
Grab the Recruiters’ Attention!
The most effective way to grab the recruiter’s attention is to highlight key information early on in your CV.
Give yourself the best head start by engaging the recruiter from the very first word through sharing all relevant information that paints a picture of yourself, your background, and your abilities.
Where possible, add a short covering note outlining your specific interest in the role.
Tailor your CV
You should maintain a flexible attitude toward the details in your CV and ensure that it is tailored for each application. Bear in mind CVs should not mislead recruiters, so only include accurate information you can verify.
If you come across a position that interests you, review the key criteria and link your relevant experience to this.
Personal Profile
Provide a brief, well-written summary describing your motivations and background.
Write a short & sweet account of your key attributes, presenting a positive profile of you and your strengths. Use this opportunity to summarise your qualifications for your future employer(s) in no more than a few lines.
Achievements
As recruiters, we come across many CVs that fail to highlight the accomplishments of a candidate. Ensure you clearly identify the key accomplishments you have achieved in your career that set you apart.
Your CV should include an ‘Achievements’ section early on or within your career history section – it is up to you where it is placed, but ensuring it is present is important.
Career History
This arguably one of the most important parts of your CV.
Be sure to arrange your career history chronologically in reverse order, beginning with your most recent position. Include a description of the role itself, its responsibilities, and your achievements in the position. Essential details should always be highlighted first.
Education
Academic achievers should treat this section as they would the rest.
Ensure all qualifications and grades are highlighted. Regardless of how many grades attained, you should always include something here. You can also include any other qualifications you have achieved in life in this section.
