The company already supplies official data, settlement and integrity services to DraftKings, FanDuel, Kalshi and Polymarket.

It also sells data and pricing to market makers and helps operators acquire customers through Legend and its broader media operation.

All I do is win: Genius CEO Mark Locke argued this week that the precise regulatory form taken by prediction markets matters less to his company than the underlying demand.

“Prediction markets will remain a meaningful part of US sports trading, but I do not expect today’s structure to survive unchanged,” he said.

“Some current advantages will disappear, and today’s winners may not be tomorrow’s.”

To win the retreat, we all in too deep: What will survive, in Locke’s view, is Americans’ appetite for wagering. “Customers want to take positions on sporting outcomes; capital wants to provide liquidity around them; and distributors want those customers,” he said.

“Regulation can change the route the activity takes without removing the activity.”

Locke said Kalshi, Polymarket, DraftKings and FanDuel were among the businesses chasing the “same valuable sports customer,” adding that well-capitalized bidders were already raising the price of premium inventory.

Lean in: Genius’ move provides further evidence of the extent that the rise of PMs is a boon to the affiliate sector. Previously, Better Collective said that its North American CPA revenue increased 50% to €5.1m in Q2, primarily due to prediction markets.

CEO Jesper Søgaard said at the time that competition between the platforms was already translating into higher acquisition prices.

“I think we can lean forward and say, on the prediction markets, because of this development, we are seeing prices go up,” he said.

Better Collective expects the category to provide a “significant part” of its H2 growth with agreements currently structured entirely around CPA.

Turf war: The same dynamic is being seen among independent affiliates. Adam Small, co-founder of Third Planet Media, told E+M his company was “moving our focus heavily toward prediction markets” and expected them to become its “number one source of income for the immediate future.”

“CPAs are rapidly on the rise, surpassing DFS+ CPAs and moving closer toward regulated sportsbooks,” he said.

Small believes there is clear overlap between the customers being targeted by exchanges and sportsbooks.

No scrubs: Small said he has yet to see sportsbooks respond by materially increasing their affiliate rates, but expects that response to come. “Things have been tight for a few years on sportsbook CPAs, but they’re once again faced with well-budgeted competition and need to adapt,” he added.

However, the value of the acquired customers remains largely untested. Small said it was “still too early to know,” particularly for the challenger brands behind Kalshi, whether present conversion, retention and lifetime-value assumptions will prove accurate.

“It’s going to take more time for operators to be confident about LTVs,” he said. “That could change by the end of this football season.”

Sweet child o’ mine: An affiliate industry insider who spoke to E+M on condition of anonymity agreed that prediction markets had provided the sector with a well-timed new revenue stream, comparing the present spending environment with the opening stages of regulated US sports betting.

“Prediction markets are spending these insane amounts on traditional marketing, so the spending on affiliation obviously doesn’t look that bad to them,” the insider told E+M.

“Against those budgets, affiliates can feel like a rounding error.”

Crash into me: But the insider warned that affiliates are experiencing the same cycle seen during the initial US sportsbook land grab. Operators overspend while establishing market share and then reduce CPAs once management begins scrutinizing the returns.

“Once the market shares are kind of there, especially for the big ones, the spending goes to normal levels,” they said.

“We saw the play. It’s not a new play. We know how it’s going to play out at the end in terms of budgets.”

That creates a window in which affiliates should “take the win,” while using the proceeds to build businesses capable of surviving the eventual pullback, they argued.

Crash and burn: The insider questioned whether revenue share would become a meaningful alternative, given the uncertain profitability of the platforms and the likelihood that financial product advertising will face tighter restrictions.

“We are in CPAs, and the CPAs are way too high,” they said. “Right now it’s overpaid. It has a certain logic to it – it’s market grabbing. And then you sit down and look at the numbers.”

Small similarly expects demand to fluctuate. Sports currently accounts for most prediction market activity and remains seasonal, while politics – the leading non-sports category – is itself driven by election cycles.

“There will be a lot of ups and downs depending on the time of year, and we should get used to that,” he said.

His longer-term interests lie in educational content and market data, although he sees an even larger possibility in becoming a third-party facilitator of transactions.

“I think being a third-party facilitator of trades is a huge opportunity,” Small said. “I’m invested in multiple companies that are trying to crack that nut in one way or another.”

Like what you are reading?
